Hubert Stowitts, an American painter and dancer, embarked on a two-year journey across India from 1928 to 1930. During his travels, he resided with and captured portraits of diverse individuals representing various facets of Indian society. From esteemed Indian leaders to ordinary artisans, Stowitts depicted a wide spectrum of Indian life. These portraits became the focal point of the exhibition "Vanishing India," held at the Los Angeles Museum in 1931.
